In February 2017 the union held its first ever equalities weekend school in Birmingham. The event was attended by 50 members who held a variety of roles including branch equality reps, branch secretaries, representative committee members, district organisers and executive committee members.
The weekend school opened with a joint presentation and Q&A session with assistant general secretary Simon Weller, EC member for district No.1 Marz Colombini and District Organiser for district No.5 Nigel Gibson.
During the weekend each representative committee gave a report on the work of their committee and workshops were held by outside facilitators on The Equality Act 2010; challenging banter, and public speaking.
Other speakers included general secretary Mick Whelan and Elly Barnes, founder of Educate and Celebrate, who had a room full of train drivers singing about gay penguins!
