Following a rule change at the 2014 AAD the equalities committees held their first joint meeting on 25th November in Birmingham.
The event was well attended with members from across the country representing the women’s, LGBT, BEM and retired members committees converging to discuss how best to progress the unions equality agenda.
The morning session of the meeting was spent discussing the current equalities structures and policies, focusing on what worked and what could be improved.
The afternoon session was joined by the General Secretary, National Organiser and District Organisers Nigel Gibson and Brian Corbett. They took part in discussions on the recruitment and organisation of branch equality reps as well as the barriers to accepting equality as part of the union’s remit.
