In March 2008, Women’s Consultative Committee member Pauline Cawood took Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly MP on a cab ride from Leeds to Sheffield.

Pauline had met the Ruth Kelly at Labour Party conference and offered to take her on a cab ride to find out what it’s like to be a train driver.
When interviewed by the Manchester Evening News, the Transport Secretary and Bolton MP said it was a “dream come true” to be invited to join one of the UK’s few women train drivers on the footplate.
