In October 2007, ASLEF worked with the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) to hold an LGBT weekend school.
The FBU, like ASLEF, has historically lacked diversity in its membership and bringing together both unions to share experiences was a valuable exercise.
Speakers at the event included Matt Wrack, General Secretary of the FBU; Sharon Allen, ASLEF Equalities Advisor, and Ali Hili from Iraqi LGBT who delivered a harrowing account on the plight of LGBT people in Iraq, and the worsening situation there due to the rise of Islamic fundamentalism.
