2006: Maternity Leave Guide

At their inception the Women’s Consultative Committee began to collect data on the maternity policies used by the different train and freight operating companies within the rail industry. This was done by way of maternity pay and conditions survey.

Following the collation of this information the committee produced ASLEF’s first best practice guide on Maternity Leave. The guide, to be used by negotiators, explains the need for a good maternity workplace policy and provides best practice guidance.

Due to the traditionally small numbers of women working in the rail industry, maternity issues had not previously been high on the agenda but the ASLEF Women’s committee sought to ensure that good maternity leave and maternity policies were implemented for drivers in all companies.
