At the 2004 AAD a rule change was submitted by Croydon Tram Light Rail No.1 was sought to introduce an Equal Opportunity Rep position on branch committees. At the time this was a new branch and this was the only item that they had put forward to conference.
The rule item was moved by the Rickmansworth delegate and seconded by Lillie Bridge. After some debate the item was carried by a majority.
This meant that for the first time, each branch could elect a rep to organise on equalities issues, and represent those from marginalised groups.
Branch equality reps have provided information and support to members on a range of equalities issues, and continue to be an important part of branches.
